Wonders of Water – from Lake Titicaca to Iguazu Fall

Travelling among the grand continent of the south america, the Lake Titicaca and the Iguazu Fall definitely are the top destinations in many people bucket lists.

Certainly, I was astonished by the power of water between the two heaven-like places on our planet. Extreme is in the sense of a calm and senerity which the lake titicaca has offered. While the Iguaza Fall represents powerful and energetic side. If you declare yourself as a ultimate sensation seeker, you will never be disappointed, especially if planning to dive into two places in one travel!

Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is located between Bolivia and Peru, high up at an altitude of 3800 meters. It is the largest navigable freshwater lake in the South America.

The lake was considered by the Inca, to be the centre of cosmos and origin. According to the legendary creation myth, the creator god Vircocha came out of the Pacific Ocean, when arrived at the Lake Titicaca, he created the Sun, Moon, Stars and all ethnic groups. It was regarded as one of the most sacred sites for the Inca civilisation. Beside the most widely known Macchu Picchu.

The Lake Titicaca still preserves the traditional way of life-style since the Inca Empire. Quechua is the spoken language in the region, which was the language of Inca Empire before the Spanish took over in the 16th Century. The Uros (floating islands) are those ancient people, who carry on their ancestors’ culture and live on these floating islands made of totora reeds.  The islands are easier to be reached from Puno, Peru side. While, there are few noticeable islands which represented the Inca mythology, the Isla del Sol (island of sun); the Isla de la luna (island of moon), where you will find temples  in honour of their god. These two islands are more near to Bolivia side.

If you want a real life experience living in the ancient time, the two bigger islands, Taquile island and Amantani island offer home stay with local family. Since the islands only have very basic supply, you are always welcomed to bring food; cooking utensils or school supplies for the children as a gift. One interesting thing is that sugar-content food are not advised because of the lack of dental facilities. Maybe I should gather my travel-addicted fellows, to organise an outreach dental care programs on the Lake Titicaca! It would be amazing experience working at the highest lake on the earth!! How about building a dental chair made of totora reed?!

Sitting on reed boat and starring at the endlessly Lake Titicaca, it was the feeling of serenity; calm and peace. The song of Beatles “Yesterday” rang in my mind “Yesterday All My Troubles Seem So Far Away…” It was breath-taking, not just by the scenery, it was my every climb up on the mountain. The high altitude only allow you to slower your pace, all you need to do is to concentrate on catching your breath. It was beautiful feeling when the conscious mind align with the physical body. It is the power of nature.

Iguazu Fall

The Iguazu Fall has its fame for the 7 Wonders of Nature. The name Iguazu means “Grand Water” in Guarani language i.e. official language of Paraguay, part of Argentina and some other parts of South America. It is located between border of Brazil and Argentina, similar to the Lake Titicaca. Visitors can enter the place from either side. Plenty discussions would be found debating which side has the better view. My personal preference is more keen on the Argentina side because it gives you a close-up to the Falls, getting wet is a must. While the panoramic view from the Brazil’s side is definitely an unique and spectacular one. So never miss the chance by visiting both sides which show the beauty in two different ways.

In contrast to the Lake Titicaca, the Iguazu Fall is a gigantic powerful master. For me, it is my Disney World; it’s the fairytale paradise which I thought would only appear in my dreams. Countless double, triple ….. rainbows hang in front of the curtain-like water mist. Together with the smell of the freshness in the water as well as the sound of pouring falls. All senses of my body were totally awaken. Try getting on a speed boat in order get to San Martin island where you can get a real close to the Devil’s Throat. The name itself is explicit enough to explain how it feels like. My experience with the Iguazu Fall is an absolute unforgettable one, it gives me strength, energy and complete refreshment. I believe it’s the magic of travel, it could totally change the perspective in life. When you placed yourself in such place like Iguazu Fall, life is positive and full of energy.

Thank you for giving me a fantastic journey!
